CPD: the ‘What, Why, How and When’
What is ‘CPD’?
CPD = Continual Professional Development
‘The systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skills, and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout the member’s working life’ (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons; RCVS 2006)
Why do we need to do CPD?
Dog training and behaviour is always evolving, in order to stay current, increase your skill set and knowledge base, it is vital that you keep your CPD up to date.
CPD is also a measurable method of showing fellow professionals and members of the public that you take your professional development seriously and can give you a strong business advantage.
As a member of the IMDT or IMDTB, it is a requirement of the membership to maintain the following level of CPD each year
- IMDT Members = 15 CPD points
- IMDTB Members = 40 CPD points
If you are both IMDT and IMDTB you will be required to fulfil the IMDTB 40point requirement.
How do I ‘do’ CPD?
Professional organisations often allocate CPD ‘points or hours’ to their educational resources, largely 1hour = 1point for reading, researching, attending courses, watching webinars etc. Please note this
is actual active learning time. Any time spent writing if you are submitting written work doesn't count. See below for an example of the CPD point allocation.
When do I need to do CPD?
CPD can be undertaken at any point. This makes it convenient for busy people. We ask our members to manage their CPD on a yearly basis.
How to submit CPD
If you log into ‘My Account’ on the website
www.imdt.uk.com you will see a tab ‘My subscription’ and you will see ‘Continuing CPD submissions’ if you log your CPD with the date, type of resource and how many hours/points and then press ‘Save’. When the submission is due you will be notified and all you have to do is press the ‘submit’ button.
How do I work out the CPD points
CPD can be worked out as 1point per 1hr of study, excluding breaks or writing if you are submitting written work, so just
active learning time.
Here is some examples but remember resources will vary so record how long it takes you.
We accept online seminars, research, books, distance learning, podcasts, day courses etc
